What is an emergency fund and how big should it be?

It is money set aside only for unexpected costs such as a job loss, a car repair or a medical bill. A common rule of thumb is three to six months of essential expenses, kept somewhere safe and easy to reach, like a savings account.
If six months feels out of reach, start with one month of expenses and build up gradually. Automating a small monthly transfer makes it much easier.
